A Brief History of Gutter Guards

I first got into the gutter guards industry in 1996. At the time, it was dominated by a couple of professionally installed gutter guard systems from LeafGuard and GutterHelmet

If do-it-yourself was more your speed, you could buy plastic diamond shaped gutter covers from your local hardware store. A professional gutter installer could do you one better by offering expanded metal screens that covered the gutters but allowed helicopters, small leaves and pine needles into the gutters.

Home Depot and Lowe’s stores were moving from large cities into smaller markets, but your options for high-quality gutter guards were limited.

In 1999, Alex Higginbotham invented LeafFilter, the first commercially available micro mesh gutter guard. Alex sold LeafFilter door-to-door until he created MasterShield, an improved version of LeafFilter. Higginbotham later sold LeafFilter’s rights to a Michigan plastics manufacturer. In 2010, an Ohio-based LeafFilter dealer, bought the rights to sell LeafFilter nationwide

Since then, the leaf guard industry has grown from a series of mom-and-pop shops into a multi-billion dollar, private-equity-backed behemoth.

Yet, most gutter guards invented since Higginbotham created the micro mesh gutter guard category have been lackluster copycats.

How Gutter Guards Direct's Expertise, Knowledge and Extensive Product Testing Benefits You

Having been part of the industry since the mid-1990s, and having spent tens of thousands of hours in the gutter installing virtually every type of gutter guard on the market, we have seen what works well and what performs poorly.

Johnathan Skardon, owner of Gutter Guards Direct

Manufacturers and dealers are increasingly relying on fake and paid-placement gutter guard reviews to claim their gutter guards are #1. With little or no support for making such claims, we began testing gutter guards in 2020 to see which leaf guards really are worth your time, attention, and consideration.

Our belief is that no one gutter guard is ideal for every situation. There may be situations where you need a Cadillac and times when a Chevy will do.

Leveraging our extensive knowledge and data that we have collected over the years, our objective is to solve your gutter and water problems with the best gutter and leaf guard systems for your environment and budget.

By offering you plenty of choices, we have the gutters, gutter guards, services, and expertise to back our words with action!

Once you know that your gutters are working properly, it’s time to consider the best gutter guards for your environment. You would think that this is as easy as picking a leaf guard that you like, but this is where most homeowners make costly mistakes.

Selecting the best gutter guards for your home requires an understanding of your surroundings.

This is the most important consideration when looking for gutter guards. While there are many species of trees, there are a handful of common trees that are located in most yards. It’s important to know how leaves, pine needles and debris will interact with different gutter guards.

Once you identify the types of trees surrounding your home, the next step to to determine which of these trees is causing the most problems. The closer trees are to your home and gutters, the more important it is to find a leaf guard that will prevent leaves and debris from clogging gutters and gutter guards.

Whether you have long or short pine needles, large or small leaves, helicopters, whirlybirds, tassels, berries or flowers, it’s likely you have at least one, if not several, types of leaves and debris clogging your gutters.

The style of your home, type of roofing materials, roof slope, gutter size and layout of downspouts will play an important role in picking the best gutter guard for your home.

Because there are so many types and styles of gutter guards on the market — available as either DIY or professionally installed — what should be easy can become an overwhelming process. It doesn’t help that most leaf guard dealers don’t know or care what are the best gutter guards for your home. Their one-size-fits-all approach often accompanies high-pressure sales tactics.

Why is this heavy-handed sales approach so popular?

Because most gutter guard dealers only offer one leaf guard, gutter helmet, or leaf filter. And that one gutter guard has to be the best cover for gutters every single time. Unfortunately, what’s best for them won’t always be what’s best for you!

By contrast, we offer a comprehensive 7-Step Analysis that factors all of these variables to make sure we are recommending the best gutter guards for your environment — every time! Since we offer several types of gutter guards, including Gutter Rx perforated aluminum, LeaFree and LeafOff solid gutter covers, plus MasterShield and LeafLock micro mesh gutter guards, we consistently provide the best combination of performance and price while simultaneously fixing your gutter and water problems once-and-for-all.

Winner of the Ultimate Gutter Guard Challenge 2021, MasterShield micro mesh gutter guards were Rated #1 when compared to leaf guards from LeafFilter, GutterGlove and Valor. MasterShield easily sheds leaves & pine needles while absorbing large volumes of water.

LeafLock is a budget-friendly micro mesh gutter guard that keeps out most leaves and debris. Its flexible design allows it to be installed within the gutter or under shingles. LeafLock fits five and 6-inch gutters.

LeaFree gutter covers are made from heavy gauge aluminum. Designed to slide under the first course of shingles, LeaFree is comparable in design and function to GutterHelmet and LeafGuard. LeaFree gutter guards are available in 15-colors and copper.

Gutter Rx leaf guards are made from a single sheet of roll-formed aluminum with hundreds of 1/8″ holes drilled into the panel. When installed properly, Gutter Rx will capture large volumes of water, and is ideal for environments where trees are not overhanging the gutters and for homeowners who don’t mind occasionally blowing leaves off the gutter guards’ surface.

DiamondBack gutter covers use a combination of expanded metal frames with a finer mesh screen that secures to the frame. The combination of two screens provides benefits of allowing large volumes of water into the gutters while repelling most leaves and debris. DiamondBack fits residential and commercial box gutters, and include two micro mesh screen densities.

With so many gutter and gutter guard choices, it’s no wonder that you’re confused about which system is best for your home, environment and budget.

Gutters are the foundation for your home’s water management system. Without properly sized and functioning gutters, it’s impossible for water to be effectively carried away from your home. In the same way that a crumbling foundation will cause your home to settle and walls to crack, gutters that are sized, installed, and draining improperly will cause damage to your home’s foundation, allow water in basements and crawl spaces; cause brick, wood, and stucco to deteriorate, while eroding dirt, plants and landscaping.

Understanding that gutters are critical to moving water away from your home, Gutter Guards Direct installs 5″, 6 inch and 7-inch seamless aluminum gutters, available in 30-colors. We also install seamless 5, 6 and 7-inch copper gutters.

We will help you pick the correct sized gutters, configure downspouts for optimal drainage, and properly install your new gutters to ensure decades of trouble-free performance.

The most common size, 5-inch gutters are installed on millions of homes across the world. Still the go-to choice for homebuilders, 5″ gutters are economical. If you are in the market for new gutters, we strongly recommend installing 6″ gutters.

Six-inch gutters are gaining in popularity for residential and commercial applications. In our opinion, if you’re installing new gutters, 6″ gutters are the way to go. When combined with larger downspouts, six-inch gutters increase water capacity by 40% when compared to 5″ gutters.

Less common, but highly effective, 7-inch gutters are fantastic for moving large volumes of water away from homes and buildings. They can be a great solution for trouble spots on homes where water is more likely to overwhelm 5″ & 6″ gutters.

Downspouts are available in a variety of sizes and shapes. The most common downspout is a rectangular 2″x3″ for 5″ gutters. 6″ gutters call for 3″x4″ downspouts, while 7″ gutters pair well with 4″x5″ downspouts. Residential round downspouts are available in 3″ and 4″ diameter sizes.

Half-round gutters are the most aesthetically appealing looking gutters on the market. They are commonly available in 5″ and 6-inch sizes. While half-round gutters are attractive, they don’t hold as much water as traditional K-style gutters and are 3- to 4-times more expensive.

Timeless beauty, the rich patina that forms on copper gutters makes a bold statement on any home. Available in traditional K and half-round styles, when paired with rectangular and round copper downspouts, copper gutters are an investment that can last a lifetime.

Just like you need a good gutter foundation before installing gutter guards, you also need to make sure the structure that supports the gutters is sound. Has poor gutter performance caused wood rot? Have water leaks damaged your fascia boards, soffits and siding? Do you have hail damage? Did a tree fall on your house and take out your roof, gutters and/or gutter guards?

There can be any number of issues related to storm damage, general wear and tear, and interior and exterior water leaks caused from poorly performing gutters and gutter guards that need to be repaired prior to installing new gutters and leaf guards.

What makes Gutter Guards Direct unique is that we have worked with neighbors near you to help them negotiate storm damage claims with their insurance carriers. We have:

  • Replaced soffits and fascia boards that rotted because of water leaks.
  • Helped homeowners recover fair market value for high-end leaf guard and leaf filter systems that insurance adjusters undervalued.
  • Removed and replaced roofs for homeowners who trusted our professional judgment and counsel during trying times.

Gutter guards direct was timely, professional, and did beautiful work. I would recommend them to anyone. They do what they say, when they say they’re going to do it. They kept me up on progress and the ownership kept me informed frequently, and overall it was extremely good relationship and success. My neighbor’s commented on how beautiful the work was. It definitely added value and aesthetic beauty to my house. I’m overall extremely pleased and would refer them once again to anyone.

I previously used Gutter Guards Direct for installation of a new gutter system in 2019. During the original quote, I asked Johnathan to quote me for gutter guards along with the gutters, so I knew how much I would be looking at in the future, if I chose his services again.

Johnathan did not pressure me into bundling services and that lack of pressure was what got the initial sale. After seeing the quality of work done on my gutters, I knew that I would be a repeat customer once I saved up. Even after 6 months in between services, Johnathan honored the original contract price for gutter guards. I also needed pressure washing services because I had some mold growing on my siding; I contacted Johnathan and he said he also provided this service. The cost for pressure washing was within my budget, so I decided to go ahead and bundle this with my gutter guard install.

His crew did and amazing job and I will no doubt hire Gutter Guards Direct in the even[t] that I need gutter repair / house washing in the future.

I found that they were very professional. Showed up on time and did a great job. Very friendly. A little high on price, but with a 20 yr guarantee on what I purchased, I’m sure I got a good deal. I would recommend them to others. They were able to schedule the initial meeting within 1 day and were able to complete the job within 3 days! With all the rain and hail damage here in Tennessee I figured it would take at least 2 weeks to get the supplies and finish the job. But they were great!

The crew that was sent were top notch. They installed my gutters and gutter shield fast and professionally. They found some rotted material and replaced it in a very cost effective way. They painted all exposed wood that was replaced. The whole job was done well and I am extremely happy with all the work. The crew should be proud of their work. I will recommend this business to anyone and everyone I can. Just give them a call if you need gutters and gutter guards.

Gutter Guards Direct replaced our gutters on our home and I would recommend them to anyone. The salesman, Jonathan S, he was very professional and helpful to make sure that we had the correct gutters and guards for our home. His knowledge of gutters was deeply needed with our home due to their fact that all rain water is important since we have a cistern for water.

The installers worked so hard while putting the gutters up. They worked very clean, and they made sure everything was cleaned up. They returned the next day to make sure the gutters and guards were in the proper place and did the final tweaks to the job. The company stands behind their product and if there is any issues with the gutter guards, there is no questions or concerns the problem is addressed and fixed! Great Job!! Thank you.

Gutter Guards Direct did a great job on our house installing their gutter system to keep out leaves and other types of debris.  I looked at other gutter guard systems, however the method in which the owner gathered information specific to our house, like using a drone to see upper level issues and the professional manner in which all tasks were carried out and the product review sold me on this system.  We have literally had no problems and elated at the job it does.  I have recommended them to others; a good company to go with.

I have enjoyed my MasterShield gutter guards and gutters for over a year and am very happy with my decision to work with Gutter Guards Direct. Johnathan was a rare find as a salesman and representative of his company. His passion for his products and product knowledge made him stand out.

He was kind and thorough and did not push me to make this relatively expensive investment into my home. These qualities, coupled with the proven quality of the MasterShield name, made this a straightforward and comfortable choice.

This may sound odd, but I am a big fan of these [MasterShield] gutter guards.

My house is located in the woods and I would dread Fall and its leafy deluge. Had these gutter guards Installed Summer 2021… No more dread, only peace of mind.

Michael N. | Nashville, TN

Living in a home built before the Civil War, I anticipate minor repairs yearly, but when I found it raining in my living room, I realized that a serious home improvement was required. The demonstration from Gutter Guards Direct inspired instant trust not only in the products presented, but also in the personal integrity of those who would be involved. Installers were pleasant to work with, and except for the dismantling of my old gutters (which truly did sound like WW III had begun) the installation was without stress, and the clean up by the crew was thorough. New gutters are beautiful, price affordable, quality excellent, and a pleasant experience all around.

I give five stars because no six star rating is provided. I can put away my living room umbrella now with confidence.
